Arsenal were ready to spend as much as £50 million on either of Thomas Muller or Robert Lewandowski earlier on in this transfer window.
This has been reported by the Daily Mail, who claim that the Gunners were willing to break their club record to secure the services of either Bayern striker, but were told that neither player would be leaving the Bavarians this summer.
Ultimately, then, the duo of Muller and Lewandowski won't be heading to north London anytime soon, but the same report from the Mail goes on to claim that Arsene Wenger and Co. have looked at Real Madrid star Karim Benzema as an alternative target.

The French international, of course, is recognised as one of the leading strikers in world football, but it's far from certain as to whether the Real hierarchy would be prepared to do business with the Gunners over the forward.
Despite possessing the duo of Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud in their ranks, it's been well documented that the Gunners have been assessing their forward line of late. It would certainly come as a major surprise if Arsenal managed to persuade Real to part ways with their star striker, but stranger things have happened.
World-class striker needed
And you have to feel that a world-class striker addition really would change the dynamics of the Premier League title race.
Don't get me wrong, the duo of Walcott and Giroud will score goals for the Gunners throughout the course of the season, but someone in the mould of Benzema would only improve them further.
In truth, though, with the close of the transfer window approaching, it's starting to look unlikely that the Emirates outfit will improve their forward line. One thing's for sure, it looks set to be an extremely interesting couple of weeks for all involved in Arsenal's transfer activity.
