Juan Mata has not been given the chance to play for Manchester United in his preferred No.10 role at any point this season.
Louis van Gaal has instead played the diminutive Spaniard on the right-wing with Memphis Depay and Adnan Januzaj both deputising in the central position behind Wayne Rooney in their opening Premier League games against Tottenham and Aston Villa.
The Dutchman is after goals from his second striker, which Mata has already proved capable of providing. He scored an impressive 20 goals for Chelsea in 2012/13 season, playing in, yes, the No.10 role.

However, Van Gaal has now revealed why the 27-year-old has not been given the chance to do the same job he did for the Blues at Old Trafford and why he is unlikely to ever get one.
Van Gaal told the club website: "I want a second striker more than a midfielder in the No.10 position. That is why Adnan (Januzaj) got his chance and he scored. What more does a trainer or manager want?"
Mata has threatened to bring the best of the form he showed at Chelsea from time to time but, in general, has failed to hit the heights that saw him named player of the season twice at Stamford Bridge.
That is in part down to the fact that both David Moyes and Van Gaal have failed to find a place for him in the side.
He may have cost £37m and takes home £140,000-a-week, but the current manager's quotes confirm that he is more of a luxury than a necessity for the Red Devils.
Can Juan Mata offer something for Manchester United while playing on the right-wing or should he get his chance in the centre?
