Manchester United made a bid for Southampton star Sadio Mane last week, before it became apparent that they would lose out on the chance to sign Pedro.
That’s according to ESPN, where it’s understood sources have relayed that Louis van Gaal’s move for Mane isn’t as shocking as many fans believe.
Not bid for Pedro
It caused internet outrage this morning this morning when it was rumoured that United had turned their attentions to Saints forward Mane, who only managed to bag 10 goal across all competitions last season during his maiden term in England.

However ESPN believe that Van Gaal had him lodged as a target even before he turned his back on Barcelona’s Pedro, who could now join Chelsea as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his own forward line.
United have had a profitable relationship with Southampton since Van Gaal’s arrival at the club, signing Luke Shaw last summer and having already purchased Morgan Schneiderlin in this window.
It seems as though the club will look to take advantage of that when they look into the possibility of luring Mane to Old Trafford, with Van Gaal keen to add speed and flair to his attacking unit following the exit of Angel Di Maria.
Naturally many United fans have already questioned the logic of signing a striker who failed to impress last term, but Van Gaal must see something in the 23-year-old that others perhaps don’t.
