Manchester United are desperate to sign Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller before the end of the transfer window, but believe the striker will have to hand in a transfer request to force a move.
A report by the Daily Star's chief football correspondent Jeremy Cross claims that Muller is Louis van Gaal's No1 target between now and September 1.
Having already agreed to sell cult hero Bastian Schweinsteiger earlier this summer, Bayern Munich are determined to keep hold of the 25-year-old.

The Red Devils have already seen a £60million bid knocked back by the Bavarian club, but that has not deterred them, however, they know a move from Muller can push the deal in their favour.
Muller is tempted by a move to Old Trafford. He has a strong relationship with Schweinsteiger and is keen to reunite with Van Gaal, who helped bring him through the youth system while in charge of Bayern.
An incredible wage packet worth £250,000-a-week is certainly helping to coax the Germany international, but if he really wants to join United he will have to make it clear to Pep Guardiola and Co.
Transfer request, requested
A United source told the same report: "He is the one the club wants more than anyone else.
"With him in the side, United could genuinely challenge for major honours again and they are willing to break the bank to get him.
"But he will have to force the issue himself and make it clear he wants to leave Bayern. It is all down to him now."
Bayern's chief operating officer Karl-Heinze Rummenigge knows just how much of a backlash will occur if they agree to sell another top star to Manchester United.
The backlash following Schweinsteiger's deal was notable and led Rummenigge to declare that no other player would be leaving for Old Trafford.
Money is not a problem for Bayern Munich. They posted a turnover of £431.2m earlier this year; a figure only bettered by Real Madrid and United themselves.
