Replacing a player that has played 17 seasons at one club is no mean feat but Liverpool could have an ideal replacement in Emre Can.
Most people would instantly think Jordan Henderson is Steven Gerrard's ideal replacement being English and having taken over the captaincy but Can could well be the main man in a few years time.
Can is currently struggling to hold down a regular starting place but the 21-year old has impressed in his two cameo substitute appearances so far this season. Last year the German was often played at centre-back or right-back, a position that is fairly unfamiliar to him.

But with Lucas Leiva set to leave the club, Can will be Liverpool's main defensive midfielder just as Gerrard was at the beginning of his career at Anfield. Gerrard sometimes struggled playing in this role, especially towards the end of his career at Liverpool, but Can has all the attributes to be the perfect defensive midfield.
Like Gerrard, Can's ability suggests he's also capable of playing more advanced than a defensive midfield role.

We've already seen Can's surging runs through midfield, an attribute you wouldn't necessarily associate with him given his gangly appearance. When he's up for it, Can's energy is there for everyone to see, pressing opponents all over the pitch and driving the team forward with his runs.
However, one thing Can will find extremely difficult to compare with Gerrard is his goal scoring ability. Gerrard's 186 goals for Liverpool will be almost impossible for almost any midfielder to beat and when you consider Can has only scored one in 42 games, it's something that he really needs to work on.
Having the ability to influence a football match like Gerrard did is a special skill and Liverpool need someone to be able to do that. To pick the game up by the scruff of the neck and change the game in a moment of brilliance is something Gerrard specialised in.
It's a lot to ask for the youngster to step in and fill Gerrard's boots instantly but with a consistent run in the side for a few years, Can could become as influential as Gerrard once was.
