A look at the history of Manchester United target Sadio Mane

With Pedro moving to Chelsea, it was reported that Manchester United had already made a bid for Sadio Mane. The Southampton forward was signed by Ronald Koeman last season from Red Bull Salzburg for £11.8m.

But who is Sadio Mane? Born in Senegal, the 23-year old had already spent one season at Southampton and made 31 appearances with 10 goals to his name.

The highlight of his Southampton career would be when he scored the fastest Premier League hat-trick against Aston Villa within two minutes and 56 seconds. A record that was held by Robbie Fowler since 1994.

Mane signed for Metz in the 2011-2012 season making 22 appearances and scored two goals before he moved to Red Bull Salzburg in the following season.

His career got better as he helped Red Bull win the domestic double of Austrian Bundesliga and the Austrian Cup in 2013-2014 season. He made a total of 87 appearances for the Red Bull and contributed 45 goals in total.

His move on transfer deadline day to Southampton last season proved that Ronald Koeman had made a shrewd signing. He is fast with good attacking prowess and two-footed. But most importantly Louis van Gaal saw that Mane has already adapted with the English football. This will make a seamless integration to the Manchester United squad.

This is maybe the reason Van Gaal opted to withdraw his interest in Pedro. Despite being a proven player in Barcelona that has won five La Liga titles and three European Cups, he could need some time to adjust with the Premier League.

We have seen in the past that other players who have succeed in other leagues have struggled to replicate their form. Names like Angel di Maria, Falcao and Andriy Shevchenko are examples of many.

Luke Shaw and Morgan Schnederlin are two former Southampton players that have already made a move to Manchester United recently. Ronald Koeman has stated that no bid has been made for Mane but United could yet make a big offer that forces their hand.

Should Sadio Mane made the move, he would be a great addition to the attacking group that consist of Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Memphis, Adnan Januzaj, Juan Mata and Ashley Young. And with attacking threats like these, it would be foolish for anyone not to have Manchester United as one of the favourite to win the Premier League this season.
