How to get the female stars of WWE over

It’s been over a month since NXT alumni Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch & Sasha Banks all moved up to the main roster to start the #DivasRevolution – but as of yet it doesn’t feel like there’s been much difference.

Okay, there have been longer matches and a bit more focus put on the ladies of WWE but right now the title hasn’t been defended since the women debuted and we’ve had a throwaway match on PPV and another throwaway PPV matched booked for Summerslam.

So how should WWE get their women over? Well here’s a list of things they could do to try and get some more interest in their division.

Drop the word ‘diva’

I get it, it’s branding and it’s the WWE female equivalent of the word ‘superstar’ but it just seems so insulting. The definition for a diva is: “a woman regarded as temperamental or haughty.”

So you’re telling me, I’m supposed to be rooting for arrogant, petulant women? Please, it sounds so demeaning. Outside of the music business, who would want to be known as a ‘diva’ anyway? It’s got a negative connotation and sounds so manufactured.

This ‘revolution’ should be about the advancement of women’s wrestling in the mainstream but right now every time the commentators plug this “Hashtag Divas Revolution” it feels like we’re still where we are but with new cast members.

Look at NXT, their title is the NXT WOMEN’S Championship and already it feels more prestigious and arguably is given its standing on NXT as a co-main event level title.

Give me a story

So far this revolution has involved some throwaway matches on TV and the shilling off a generic hashtag – I have no clue why these women are fighting.

The original story was Paige was sick of the Bellas getting away with their tricks and needed some backup to even the odds but now that all seems to have been lost and turned into some turf war that’s not even been explained.

Why are Charlotte & Becky siding with Paige, why is Sasha Banks siding with Naomi and Tamina? Who should I be rooting for in this war?

It feels like whoever came up with this just went “Well, the fans aren’t happy that the women don’t get enough time, well, we’ll throw our three most competent female workers on Raw with no story and they’ll be happy.”

It should have gone: Paige is unhappy at the Bellas weaselling out of every challenge and just keeping the belts, the final straw being ‘twin magic’ at Money in the Bank, with no help on the main roster she enlists the help of Charlotte & Becky who she explains have been her best friends since she moved to the US and two people she can trust with her back.

At Battleground, Paige has one last shot at Nikki’s title with Brie, Alicia Fox, Charlotte & Becky at ringside, Charlotte & Becky basically ensuring this match happens down the middle whilst Brie & Alicia try to screw Paige out of the title again.

Anyway, Paige wins finally and after beating Nikki again the next night says Nikki’s at the back of the line and she will only defend against anyone who’s come through NXT.

The Paige, Charlotte & Becky programme starts off fine at first, they all respect eachother and put on some great matches, Charlotte & Becky get a few non-title victories.

Paranoid that her reign as champion is going to be ended by one of these two she starts playing dirty and eventually turns full-on heel.

Then after Sasha Banks finishes putting Bayley over on NXT, she joins the main roster and attacks Paige and says Paige was never part of the solution, as being part of Total Divas makes her part of the problem – transitioning into a Paige Vs Sasha feud for the title.

There, an actual story and a reason for me to watch.

Let the women tell me why I should care

This sort of goes into the “Give me a story” but instead of having Team PCB seem disinterested on commentary, let them cut a decent promo on why the Bellas need to be brought down and why Team BAD aren’t the solution to the women’s division.

Equally, give time to Team Bella; have them tell me how they’re the reason for WWE having a show on E! How they bring all the publicity and how they’re the reason these women have a chance in WWE.

The best heels are the ones who have justification for their actions.

The same goes for Team BAD, they need to tell me why they’re either face/heel and why I should care. At the minute, it’s just so hard to get into and care.

Have Nikki defend her title

The great hullabaloo so far has literally just been about “Oh look at these three women who can wrestle!” and Nikki has coasted off into the background without having to defend her title once.

I’m not opposed to her keeping the title longer than AJ Lee, in fact, it’s a great way to draw heat on her and put over whoever takes the belt off her but she has to defend it a little bit.

Even if it ends up in a non-finish or a dusty finish it would be so much better to draw heat and excite the crowd if it looked like she was about to lose the title.

At the minute, she’s just a background player who doesn’t have to defend her title, her holding that belt should symbolise everything wrong with the divas division according to the women against her and I don’t get that vibe from either Team PCB or Team BAD – mostly because none of them have actually challenged for the title yet.
