Marseille coach Eric Gerets admitted his team were given a rough ride by Spartak Moscow before finally clicking into gear and securing a healthy first-leg cushion in their UEFA Cup last 32 tie.

OM scored three second-half goals - through Benoit Cheyrou, Taye Taiwo and Mamadou Niang - on Wednesday to grab a 3-0 advantage going into next week´s second leg in the Russian capital.

Gerets said: "We said that we were not going to change our system of play against Spartak and that allowed us to create a lot of chances, but Spartak started aggressively,"
