De Bruyne is reportedly on the brink of a move to Manchester City, but German website Sport 1 understand United have entered the running at the eleventh hour.
In order to prevent De Bruyne moving to the Etihad Stadium, though, United will need to act swiftly. The Belgium international has, according to the Guardian, already agreed personal terms with Manuel Pellegrini’s side ahead of a big-money move to the Premier League.
Bayern Munich have ruled themselves out of the running for De Bruyne, who scored 10 goals and provided an astonishing 21 assists in the Bundesliga last term, leaving the two Manchester clubs to battle it out for the 24-year-old’s signature.
However, Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail has played down Sport 1’s latest report, informing his Twitter followers that Manchester United are not trying to sign the former Chelsea attacker.
De Bruyne could play wide-right for United
De Bruyne could cost as much as £55 million to sign before the transfer window closes on September 1, but he would undoubtedly be a marquee signing for the Red Devils who have missed out on several top transfer targets this summer.
Louis van Gaal planned to use Pedro as his right-sided forward, but could deploy the versatile De Bruyne in that position if United are successful in their efforts to lure the Belgian to Old Trafford.
This would be bad news for Juan Mata, who has started in all four of Manchester United’s matches in that position this season but has failed to make a significant impact.
