Representatives of Wolfsburg playmaker Kevin De Bruyne have not had contact from Manchester United, despite reports claiming the Red Devils are keen to sign the Belgium international.

German website Sport 1 revealed on Monday that United had entered the race for the 24-year-old’s signature at the eleventh hour and were prepared to pay as much as £55 million for the Manchester City target.

This story was dismissed by Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail, while the player’s representatives have also denied any contact from the Premier League giants.

But it’s not all good news for Manchester City, who have already agreed personal terms with the former Chelsea ace, because the in-demand player’s representatives have confirmed they are in talks with Bayern Munich over a potential move at the end of the season.

This new information comes courtesy of Sky Sports, who tweeted the news to their four million followers on Tuesday afternoon.

It prompted a string of reply from football fans - not just Manchester United supporters - and here are some of the best tweets.

Van Gaal is looking at other targets

De Bruyne may have failed to make an impact during his first spell in the Premier League, but he has flourished in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg.

Last season he scored 10 goals and provided a magnificent 21 assists in the German top flight, hence the interest from clubs such as Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

De Bruyne would be a stunning signing for the Red Devils, too, but it seems Louis van Gaal may have his sights set on other transfer targets with just seven days left before the window closes.
