However the Spanish playmaker offered a caveat - he'd only give up his number if Wayne Rooney agreed to hand over the number 10 shirt, which he refused to do.
The former Southampton midfielder joined the Red Devils for around £25 million this summer, and has been handed the number 28 for his maiden campaign at Old Trafford.

Schnedierlin has made a strong start to his career at Manchester United and has started in all three of their Premier League fixtures so far, helping his new club to fourth in the table.
Although he appears to have established himself as a first team regular the French international still wasn't able to wrestle his favourite shirt number from Mata. Schneiderlin wore the number four during his time at St. Mary's and according to France Football was keen on upgrading at Manchester United.
However Rooney's relationship with the number ten put an end to any potential switch. The England international has previously revealed that 10 is his favourite number and he swooped on the shirt once it was vacated by Ruud van Nistelrooy once he left for Real Madrid back in 2006.
Schneiderlin could have had worn number two, three or nine but opted to wear the 28 shirt. Number 15 is also free at Manchester United, although the club's fans will hope that those shirts are filled before the close of the transfer window.
The Red Devils take on Club Brugge in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier in Belgium this evening, where Schneiderlin is expected to start.
