Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil believes the English press have been harsh on his compatriot Bastian Schweinsteiger and should allow the Manchester United midfielder time to settle in the Premier League following his summer move from Bayern Munich.

Ozil, who has received his fair share of criticism from the British press since arriving in England two years ago from Real Madrid, has the utmost confidence that Schweinsteiger will flourish at Old Trafford.

The Gunners’ ace gave his view on Schweinsteiger to German website Sport 1 - and brought to our attention by ESPN, who including a quote from the Mail on Sunday which claims United’s new central midfielder “no longer [has] the legs to dominate matches”.

"The drastic interim judgement in [the] English press is not fair towards him,” Ozil hit back, defending his international teammate. “He certainly needs some time to adjust to Premier League. Just allow him a bit of time."

"Whenever the English media writes about Bastian, they put a World Cup winner before his name. He's now the German world champion, who should make the difference for United.”

Schweinsteiger's experience and quality will benefit United

Schweinsteiger was expected to become a firm fixture in Manchester United’s midfield following his £6.3 million move from Bayern, but has started in just one of the Red Devils’ four competitive fixtures so far this term.

He made his first start against Newcastle United on Saturday but played just 59 minutes before being subbed off by Louis van Gaal for Michael Carrick.

It seems Schweinsteiger may no longer be the all-action midfielder who reached world-class status during his lengthy spell at the Allianz Arena.

But he remains a class act whose experienced and knowhow should be beneficial to Manchester United throughout the next three seasons.
