Manchester United may offer Phil Jones to Everton in a deal to sign the Toffees’ in-demand central defender John Stones before the transfer window closes on September 1.
This is according to ESPN, who understand that Everton boss Roberto Martinez is not particularly keen on the idea of signing Manchester United’s out-of-favour centre-back Jonny Evans.
Stones, 21, submitted a formal transfer request earlier this week in a bid to force through a move to Chelsea. But Manchester United have not given up hope of signing the former Barnsley starlet and will attempt to hijack the Blues’ bid, according to this latest report from Miguel Delaney.

United shouldn't give up on Phil Jones
But while Chelsea are offering a staggering amount of money for Stones, Everton might be more tempted to negotiate a deal with Manchester United if it means securing the services of Jones in return.
Jones did not enjoy the best season of his career last term, but the 23-year-old remains a central defender of considerable talent and potential.
United paid Blackburn Rovers £16.5 million for his services four years ago and Sir Alex Ferguson famously tipped the Preston-born defender to become a Red Devils legend.
But Jones, who signed a new four-year contract in June, has failed to fulfil his immense potential so far. He has also struggled with injuries since arriving at Old Trafford in 2011.
A deal for the supremely talented Stones, who is similar in many ways to former United defender Rio Ferdinand, would be an outstanding coup for Louis van Gaal’s side - but they shouldn’t be prepared to give up on Jones just yet.
