Chelsea miss out on Aymen Abdennour

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho looks to have turned his attention away from Everton defender John Stones, however the Blues have missed the opportunity to sign Tunisia international Aymen Abdennour from AS Monaco.

Stones handed in a transfer request last week in an attempt to force himself a move to Chelsea after they had three bids rejected for the young defender.

Chelsea looked set to go in with a fourth and final bid, however Everton's reluctance to sell appears to have paid off as the Blues drop their interest in signing the 21-year-old.

Chelsea faced yet another shock defeat yesterday afternoon after Crystal Palace stunned them 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. The champions find themselves in a poor early position and Premier League rivals Manchester City are already eight points clear of Jose Mourinho's side.

But Chelsea were beaten to the signing of Abdennour as he signed a five-year deal for Valencia last night for an undisclosed fee, according to ESPN, and now the English club will have to make a late bid to sign a different defender.

Abdennour could have been the third major addition at Stamford Bridge, following the signings of Pedro from Barcelona, and fellow teammate Falcao who signed from Monaco on a season-long loan.

With just two days remaining in the transfer window, it is clear that Chelsea will try and make one last signing; the addition of another defender will surely bolster a defence that has already conceded nine goals this season, Sunderland are the only team to concede more than Chelsea with ten.

WHO NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

After Valencia had beaten Chelsea to the signing of Abdennour, reports claim that the London club are linked with Zenit St. Petersburg defender Ezequiel Garay.

The former Real Madrid and Benfica player has only been with the Russian side for a season, after former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas brought the Argentinian to the club for £10.8m.

However Chelsea seem to have left it late for their final summer signing, and look set for a busy deadline day on Tuesday as they search for a new defender to join the club.
