Arsene Wenger: David Ospina is working hard to become No.1

Published 3 Comments

Arsene Wenger has revealed that David Ospina has responded well to the competition forced upon him by Petr Cech, despite the fact it means he’s been resigned to occupying the No.2 slot.

The Colombia international was a regular fixture in Arsenal’s first-team last season as the performances of Wojciech Szczesny failed to inspire, but since the arrival of Cech he’s been forced to spend time on the bench.

Wenger on Ospina

However, as Wenger told his club’s official website, it’s only serving to inspire Ospina to work harder, with the 27-year-old of the impression that he can work his way back into the team in the future.

“He’s responded very well,” the Arsenal boss said.

“David Ospina is a very strong man and a fantastic goalkeeper.

“He’s ready for the fight and will give Petr Cech a hard time. There will be enough room for him to play games as well, maybe sometimes to come in during the season.

“Why shouldn’t he be able to win his No 1 shirt back? That’s the target for him and I’m convinced he will fight for that.”

Cech battle

Of course Ospina will have been given reason to believe he does stand a chance of ousting Cech after the former Chelsea man’s Gunners Premier League debut.

Cech was at fault for both of West Ham’s goals as Slavan Bilic’s side stole an unlikely victory at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day of the season, leaving many to ponder whether selling the Czech international had been a masterstroke from Jose Mourinho.

The number one

Of course Cech has since proven that it was just a bad day at the office - his recent performance against Liverpool was particularly brilliant - and so Ospina will have his work cut out for him if he’s to provide a real challenge.

The ex-Nice man boasts a wealth of experience himself, but he can’t compare to Cech when it comes to pedigree and proven quality in England’s top flight. Few can, really.

Arsenal fans, do you think Ospina will ever be ahead of Cech in the pecking order? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.
