Hakan Calhanoglu is the latest star to be linked with a last minute move to Old Trafford, and the Turkey international could be the final signing by Manchester United and Louis van Gaal this summer if a proposed £26million bid goes succesfully.
Javier Hernandez completed his move to Bayern Leverkusen late on Monday night and it may be a deal breaker that United secure the services of highly-rated midfielder Calhanoglu, who has impressed for the German side in recent years.
According to The Independent the deal could be worth a feasible £26m from United, who are looking to strengthen in attack following the departure of Hernandez and the impending arrival of highly untested teen star Anthony Martial from Monaco.
The 21-year-old Calhanoglu is renowned for his deadly free-kicks and has been on the radar at some of Europe's top clubs, having risen to prominence during a rejuvenation period for Leverkusen, who finished third in the Bundesliga last year.
With Adnan Januzaj also moving to Germany via a loan move to Borussia Dortmund, Van Gaal is thinning out his squad towards the tail end of the transfer window, lending to the theory that he may be ready to pounce for more attacking options late on in the day.
Calhanoglu would add the creativity and attacking threat the club has lacked in recent domestic performances.
Competition from Juve
Juventus look set to provide late competition for United as they also aim to overturn recent dismal performances in the league. However Calhanoglu might himself have been the bartering tool that saw Hernandez move the other way.
The transfer window closes at 6pm, with no deal struck as of yet. Time is running out and Van Gaal needs to move fast in order to add a bit more fire power and precision to his attack.
