Chelsea were willing to break the British transfer record to secure the services of Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba in this summer's transfer window.
This has been reported by the Independent, who claim that the west London outfit attempted to land the French international, as well Everton defender John Stones, before the close of the market.
Ultimately, though, Chelsea failed in their pursuit of both players, however the same report from the Independent claims that the club remain seriously interested in the duo ahead of a potential future switch to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues, of course, were active on the final day of the window, as they secured the services of Michael Hector from Championship outfit Reading and Papy Djilobodji from French side Nantes, however they failed to land a high profile name before the close of today's deadline.
One thing's for sure, if the Independent is to be believed, Chelsea's pursuit of Pogba and Stones has only just begun.
Pogba the game changer
There's no doubt about it, the signing of Pogba really would have been a remarkable one for Chelsea in this transfer window.
At the end of the day, after a disappointing start to the Premier League season, the Blues were clearly in need of a top name, and Pogba would have most definitely been that.
A midfield trio of Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas really would have helped the Blues, as they go in search of retaining their Premier League title this season. Unfortunately for Jose Mourinho and Co., it just wasn't meant to be.
