So it turns out Louis van Gaal is a man of his word after all.

Having spoken of his desire for a surprise striker - one all aspects of the media struggled to see coming - he finally got his man in Anthony Martial on Tuesday afternoon. 

The Monaco youngster is now officially the most expensive teenager in football. He takes the honour from new teammate Luke Shaw, whose £30million move from Southampton last summer broke the record previously held by Lucas Moura of Paris Saint-Germain.

Martial has been given the number nine shirt held last term by Radamel Falcao, with his Monaco teammate struggling to make an impression and netting just four goals across all competitions. 

Since Andy Cole the number has seemed to haunt players rather than spur them onto greater things, so here are the past three number nines that the Frenchman will be looking to avoid comparisons with during his time at Old Trafford.
