Manchester United's £36 million deal for Anthony Martial has raised a lot of eyebrows in the footballing world.
Many people are wondering what possessed the Red Devils to shell out such a high fee on a player who has scored 11 league goals in his career and is un-capped by his country.
However, the Daily Mail are reporting a Manchester United source has claimed the Old Trafford club had no choice but to pay the fee in order to beat other huge clubs to the 19-year-old.

The source likened the deal for Martial to the deal that saw Cristiano Ronaldo join the club from Sporting Lisbon 12 years ago.
The Daily Mail quote the source as saying: "'Barcelona, Paris St Germain, Chelsea and City were all in on pre-contract for Martial next season,
"We paid a premium to get him now. It is similar to what we did with Ronaldo - and that turned out OK.
"'The player has been watched a number of times. It was only when Monaco lost in the Champions League play-off to Valencia that it became something we could do."
ALL ABOUT POTENTIAL
If Martial turns into half the player that Ronaldo became then the Red Devils have a top quality player on their hands.
The teenager has been likened to a young Thierry Henry by some people in France and has a growing reputation.
The assertion that other clubs were also interested in the former Monaco man comes as no surprise, as Chelsea were rumoured to have lodged a bid for his services earlier in the window and also makes the idea of spending such an eye-water amount on a player easier to comprehend.
