Williams helped Wales edge closer to sealing their place at next summer’s European Championships in France - what is poised to be the British nation's first appearance at a major tournament since the 1958 World Cup finals - as Chris Coleman’s men recorded another valuable point with a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Israel in Cardiff on Sunday evening.
And Ferdinand, the Manchester United hero who hung up his boots at the end of last season, was impressed by the Wales captain.

“Just watchin the Wales boys,” Ferdinand tweeted, “how Arsenal or Lfc haven't gone for Ashley Williams last few yrs is beyond me-better than what they have bought.”
Indeed, Williams is a natural leader who has excelled for Swansea City since the Welsh club were promoted to the Premier League in 2011.
Although the 31-year-old has been linked with several of the so-called top Premier League clubs over recent seasons - including Arsenal - Swansea have never come too close to losing their influential centre-back.
Williams would have been a decent signing for both clubs
Some Arsenal and Liverpool fans might agree with Ferdinand’s assessment, though.
It could be argued that Williams would have been a better signing for Liverpool than the likes of Kolo Toure or even Dejan Lovren, who cost the Reds a cool £20 million last summer.
Arsenal have had less need for a central defender of Williams’ class with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in their ranks, but there’s no doubt the Welshman would have been a valuable asset for the Gunners had Arsene Wenger decided to bring him to the Emirates Stadium.
