Football Association of Ireland chief executive John Delaney faces a crunch meeting with a number of senior players at which he will simply be told: "Just get the best manager for the job."

Delaney and the rest of the FAI board will now start their search for a new manager in earnest following the conclusion of the Republic´s poor European Championship qualifying campaign. As part of the process, Delaney is to sound out key members of the squad such as captain Robbie Keane and vice-captain Shay Given.

Following Saturday´s 2-2 draw against Wales, Given said: "As for nationality, I´m not bothered. In an ideal world you want an Irishman, but at the minute I would just say, ´Get the best person in´.
