Why Louis van Gaal is right for Manchester United

Published 2 Comments

Like him or loathe him, Louis van Gaal possesses both the credentials and ambition Manchester United sorely need in re-vamping a club in dire need of change.

United have struggled to maintain a brand of football that truly excites the supporters, despite winning more trophies than any other English football club, over the last 25 years.

And when one considers that the youth academy system Sir Alex Ferguson spent so much time and effort developing, has not produced enough stars recently, it is little wonder the club find themselves struggling to put out a team brimming with industry, confidence or flair.

Yet, the owners and directors of the club are fully aware that significant changes are needed to bring another spell of long-term success, changes that often require difficult decisions to be made.

Van Gaal might appear harsh at times, but in his career as a successful manager, he has never shied away from making difficult decisions and he certainly doesn't dwell on them.

Can Van Gaal deliver trophies?

Interestingly for United supporters, it was in 2009/10 that Van Gaal took over a Bayern Munich team that experienced initial difficulty in playing to his philosophy and he made widespread changes, installing many young players in the process.

Bayern Munich went onto win the domestic double that season and was just pipped to a treble, losing to Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

Despite the fact this is likely to be LvG's last management role at a professional football club, his recent actions in the transfer market show he is unwilling to hold onto players he does not feel give him the best chance of success.

He has ultimately decided to stick with players he can trust to follow his philosophy, whilst bringing new players in that he believes will help form a trophy winning side, both now and in the future.

Man Utd needed to make wholesale changes and that is what is being done under LvG's experienced eye.

It does however, remain to be seen whether Van Gaal can achieve the success with one of the biggest global names in football, but there is little doubt he is hungry to end his career on a high.
