Arsenal completing the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo. It might be the stuff of lucid Gunners dreams, but at one point in time it was a fairly conceivable concept.

The Daily Mirror today offer an insight into just how close the financial crisis involving the club’s move to the Emirates Stadium came to disabling them, with it ultimately being the reason they couldn’t sign Ronaldo.

The Portuguese forward visited the north London giants’ training ground before signing for Manchester United in 2003, but the sad state of affairs meant that Arsene Wenger didn’t have the money to sign him from Sporting Lisbon.

Wilshere setback

In other news, Wenger has confirmed that Jack Wilshere has suffered a minor setback in his recovery from injury.

The midfielder definitely won’t be ready in time for this weekend’s fixture against Stoke City, with no return date pencilled in as of yet.

Wenger was reportedly interested by the Spanish giants and the project they were working on, with Calderon having been in office at the Santiago Bernabeu between 2006 and 2009.
