David de Gea looks to reclaim his spot as United's number one

David de Gea has been Manchester United player of the year for the past two years, fans adored him and the coach Louis van Gaal couldn't praise him enough.

This season tells a very different story entirely, after De Gea had been poised to join Spanish giants Real Madrid all summer, the deal finally came to a collapse on deadline day as the farcical story began of the necessary paperwork not being submitted in time.

The Manchester United star, has not played a single game for the Red Devils' this season, as manager Louis van Gaal felt the Spaniard was not focused, fearing Real Madrid's obvious interest in him would have a detrimental affect on his performance.

The 24-year-old played his first competitive game of the season in a Euro 2016 qualifying game for his country against Macedonia on Tuesday. According to BBC Sport, after the game De Gea stated;

"I felt good, I really wanted to play. Now I need to keep working and see if I have some good fortune at my club as well.

"My future will be the same as now: remain calm, keep working and improving. In concrete terms, enjoy my football. I am happy."


Argentine Sergio Romero has been in the number one role for all of United's games this season, but after a shaky performance against Swansea just before the International break, questions will be asked on whether he is up to the job.

Victor Valdes is another goalkeeping option but it seems he is still out of favour with Dutchman Van Gaal.

De Gea has been added to Manchester United's Champions League squad, it remains to be seen who will start for United as they host Liverpool at Old Trafford in the Premier League, on Saturday.
