Substitute Nihat Kahveci struck a late winner as Villarreal downed high-flying rivals Atletico Madrid 4-3 in another action-packed match at the Vicente Calderon.

In Atletico´s two previous home league matches they had beaten Real Zaragoza 4-0 and Sevilla 4-3, and it was to prove a similarly thrilling encounter on Sunday. However, Javier Aguirre´s side were on the receiving end this time, as they let leads of 2-0 and 3-2 slip, whilst also missing a penalty through captain Maxi Rodriguez, to slump their third defeat of the season.

There were just nine minutes on the clock when the first of the seven goals were scored, with Atletico taking the lead through Pablo Ibanez. Simao Sabrosa played a short corner to Mariano Pernia and the full-back´s cross into the box was met by Ibanez who powered a header into the top corner of the net.
