Arsenal star Per Mertesacker was left shaken but unhurt after his car aquaplaned into the central reservation on the M1 during a torrential downpour.

The German centre-back is said to have lost control of his vehicle as a result of a freak shower on Monday and spun out of control.

Luckily for everyone involved, Mertesacker escaped unharmed but was understandably disturbed by the incident.

A club source told The Mirror: “Per had an accident after he left training this morning [MON] when he went onto the M1 returning home.

“The car aquaplaned into the crash area on the central reservation.

“He was shaken up but not injured. No other vehicles were involved, and there was no one else in his car.

“It’s not a big deal. Per is fine and ready to return to training.”

More problems

Mertesacker is not expected to travel to Croatia with the Arsenal squad ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash against Dinamo Zagreb.

Struggling with what Arsene Wenger described as a severe viral infection, the lanky defender has missed Arsenal's last three games but is in contention to return for Saturday's game against Chelsea.

Replacement ready

However, his team-mate Gabriel has impressed while filling in for Mertesacker and was praised for his rough and ready performance against a physical Stoke City last weekend.

In fact, the Brazilian has a superb record for the Gunners, winning ten and drawing one of the 11 games he has started since arriving in January. In those games, whilst he was on the pitch, they have conceded just four goals.

So, Arsenal fans, who do you think should partner Laurent Koscielny in defence?
