Steve Finnan´s injury-time equaliser could not save Republic of Ireland boss Steve Staunton from calls for his dismissal after a dismal goalless draw against Cyprus at Croke Park.

Stelios Okkarides had struck 10 minutes from full-time to heap more misery upon the sinking Irish and apparently pave the way for one of the most embarrassing home defeats in their history.

But Finnan fired home deep into added time to at least save the Irish acute embarrassment. Cyprus midfielder Marios Ilia was sent off during the visitors´ protestations.
