Shaw suffered the injury, which could potentially see him miss the remainder of the 2015-16 campaign, following a hefty challenge from PSV defender Hector Moreno.
The England international was down for around 10 minutes, receiving treatment from medical staff inside the Philips Stadion, before being taken to a hospital in Eindhoven where he underwent surgery hours later.
Shaw thanked fans on Twitter
Within an hour of suffering the horrific injury, Shaw was on Twitter, thanking fans and his former club Southampton for their messages of support.
WARNING: Graphic image
And if this new image of is from Shaw, it seems the left-back’s operation has been a success, even if it looks a little gruesome with the squeamish.
Fans react on Twitter
Manchester United fans and supporters of other clubs, meanwhile, have reacted to the photo on Twitter.
Back in six months?
The Guardian understand there might be a chance Shaw will return to action within six months, which seems somewhat optimistic given the extent of the injury.
But it wold be a major boost for both Louis van Gaal and England manager Roy Hodgson, ahead of next summer’s European Championships in France, if the dynamic full-back is back in action before the end of the season.
