Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has expressed his delight on Facebook after playing his 100th match in the UEFA Champions League.

The four-time Ballon d’Or winner posted a photo of himself holding up a special Barcelona shirt with ‘Messi 100’ on the back, alongside the following comment: “I’m really happy to have played 100 games in the best club competition in the world.

“There have been a lot of European nights to remember and there are many more magic nights to come.”

Messi was unable to mark his 100th appearance in Europe’s premier club competition with a goal, but played the full 90 minutes at the Stadio Olimpico as Barcelona secured a 1-1 draw against AS Roma - a match that will be remembered less for Messi’s personal milestone, and more for Alessandro Florenzi’s stunning long-range goal.

Messi favourite to win the Ballon d'Or - but...

Messi is yet to hit top gear this season, having scored just one goal in La Liga and the Champions League combined so far, but the Argentina international will be keen to get back to his prolific best after Cristiano Ronaldo scored a remarkable eight goals in his previous two matches for Real Madrid.

Messi is still the firm favourite to win the Ballon d’Or for a record-breaking fifth time in January - after helping Barcelona to secure a historic treble, and guiding Argentina to the Copa America final in Chile - but might be slightly concerned about Ronaldo’s recent resurgence, with weeks to go before voting gets underway for world football’s most prestigious individual accolade.
