Mata selected the legendary Peter Schmeichel in goal, followed by a defence comprised of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra.
The midfield is very strong: featuring Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham. And in front of that talented quartet is Eric Cantona, George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton.
Even the most passionate and clued-up Manchester United supporter would struggle to name a better eleven; it’s patently clear that Mata knows his stuff.
Which players should have been included?
But which players can feel aggrieved to have missed out from Mata’s perfect XI?
Well, there’s Roy Keane - one of the best players of the Premier League era - and another former United captain, Bryan Robson.
Denis Law, who became the first Manchester United player to win the Ballon d’Or in 1964, also deserved a mention.
As did Duncan Edwards, the former England international who died as a result of the Munich air disaster in 1958. Charlton famously said that Edwards was the only player who made him feel inferior.
