Cristiano Ronaldo's red-hot form will lead to a response from Lionel Messi

Published 1 Comments

The debate will rage on for eternity, who is better, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?

They are two phenomenal footballers who have now competed for years in one of the sport's fiercest rivalries.

Their achievements are remarkable, and with seven Ballon d'Or awards and counting, the pair could dominate for another few years, yet.

Many pundits believe that Messi, the skilful artisan, is the superior footballer. They praise Ronaldo's determined athleticism and his relentless self-improvement but believe the Argentine has the greater gift.

Other pundits find virtue in the totality of Ronaldo's game; indeed, it is hard to find a weakness. These commentators suggest that perhaps, where the Portuguese is complete as an athlete and footballer, Messi lacks certain physical attributes that Portugal captain boasts.

The rivalry has continued into the new season, though, and it is Ronaldo, who has made the stronger start. Neither superstar scored for their club in September, but the last few days has seen him come into his own.

The Portuguese netted an astonishing five goals against Espanyol at the weekend and followed that up with an equally impressive Champions League hat-trick against Shakhtar Donetsk last night.

In any other era, the former Manchester United man would be indisputably the best player on the planet. His goalscoring exploits make it difficult to look past him.

When all is said and done, history will show that Messi and Ronaldo, each scoring upwards of 50 goals in a season, are anomalies. Nobody in the history of the game has done this, let alone over such a prolonged period in consecutive seasons.

The feats of these two footballers are remarkable, and fortunately for fans across the planet, Ronaldo - now just two goals shy of Raul's Real Madrid club record - is in blistering form.

Whenever either player puts a run together, the response is swift and decisive from the other, too; so now with Ronaldo leading the way, expect Messi to come roaring back over the coming weeks.

Football fans the world over should just be grateful to witness an era of such unmatched greatness.
