Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been thanked by Gary Lineker on Instagram after conducting an interview about his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney ahead of a forthcoming BBC documentary on England’s new all-time top goalscorer.
It’s usually other players talking about Ronaldo for documentaries, but the three-time Ballon d’Or winner has taken time out of his hectic schedule to talk about Rooney ahead of the programme, which airs on BBC One early next month.
The documentary will show fans more about Rooney the man, rather than the footballer, with the Manchester United captain recently explaining: “I have been approached many times about allowing the cameras into our lives and always said no. But now seems the right time. This film is not just about my goals, it's about the people I care about the most, my teammates, the people closest to me but most importantly, my family.”

But, of course, there will be interviews from current and former teammates, managers and other high-profile names from the football world.
Rooney recently overtook Lineker and Sir Bobby Charlton to become England’s record goalscorer - a remarkable achievement that is likely to stand for many, many years.

Explaining more about the forthcoming documentary on Rooney, Lineker added: "I think that our film will allow the public to discover the real Wayne Rooney. It's been great spending time with him and the whole Rooney family. Remember also that Wayne is still only 29, he could push this record considerably higher yet.”
Huge mutual respect
Rooney and Ronaldo struck up a formidable on-pitch partnership during their five years together at Old Trafford, winning a host of major honours together, including three Premier League titles, two League Cups, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
Although the two men don’t see much of each other these days, there’s obviously still a huge mutual respect that exists between them.
It will be fascinating to see what Ronaldo has to say about Rooney in this new documentary next month.
