Manchester United began the recently closed transfer window in impressive fashion with the acquisition of Memphis Depay before it had even begun in earnest, while Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin soon followed.
They did, however, end the summer with something of a whimper.
Ok, so Anthony Martial was signed on deadline day in what was to be Manchester United’s biggest deal of the transfer period. Yet, despite the teenager’s potential, he was not the marquee name supporters had hoped for.

But, it would seem, the club’s failure to recruit an attacking of defensive talent of global repute was not for a lack of trying, with it claimed that Ed Woodward attempted to sign no less than six Real Madrid players.
This information comes courtesy of the Sunday Times, with a report from Duncan Castles revealing that, over the course of the summer months, Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Raphael Varane and Keylor Navas were all on Woodward’s radar.
But, alas, not one of these players ended up at Old Trafford. And neither, of course, did David de Gea move - as he was expected - to the Santiago Bernabeu following an almighty balls-up on the final day of the window.
This calamity will likely influence Manchester United’s prospects of signing any of the aforementioned Madrid players in the near future, given the slanging match that has since ensued between the two clubs.
That is, of course, unless there is an agreement in place for De Gea to finally move to Madrid at the end of the season, with the goalkeeper’s contract extension nothing more than a ruse. It would certainly be very Jorge Mendes.
