Chelsea striker Diego Costa and Arsenal defender Gabriel were involved in a bust-up yesterday which led to the latter being sent off, and now new pictures appear to show what antagonised the centre-back.
Arsenal fans were up in arms over the incident during the game, which ended in a 2-0 win for Chelsea. Replays showed Costa coming to blows with Laurent Koscielny before his showdown with Gabriel, which ended with the Brazilian taking an early bath on the stroke of half-time.
Goals from Kurt Zouma and Eden Hazard sealed a valuable three points for Jose Mourinho's men - only their second league win of the season - before Arsenal's Santi Cazorla also saw red before the full-time whistle.
Now it seems as though new pictures show what caused Gabriel to react furiously to Costa's provocation. The Daily Mail are carrying an image this morning which seems to show that the Chelsea forward left noticable scratch marks on his Arsenal rival's neck, which went unnoticed by referee Mike Dean.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger hit out at Costa after the game, while Jose Mourinho insisted his striker had done little wrong and that Arsenal were trying to distract attention away from another damaging defeat to their title credentials.
He told reporters after the game: "I don't have a view on the sending off. Man of the match for sure was Diego Costa. He brought everything to the game."
"I think I’ve played against Arsenal 15, 16 times. "Only once they didn’t moan. I don’t know why, perhaps it is because they won that game," the Special One added.
Arsenal will now have to turn their attention to a Capital One Cup showdown with rivals Tottenham, while Chelsea take on Walsall.
