Liverpool’s owners FSG have contacted Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti about the possibility of replacing Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.
This is according to the Daily Mail, who understand that the 56-year-old is Liverpool’s first-choice replacement for the under-fire Rodgers if they decide to sack the Northern Irish coach.
Ancelotti has been out of work since the summer, when he left Real Madrid following a two-year spell at the Bernabeu which saw him lift the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup trophies, plus the Copa del Rey.

Former Liverpool stars Jamie Carragher and Dietmar Hamann have both recently been quoted as saying Anfield officials must give Rodgers more time, until Christmas at least, after backing him in the summer.
But it seems FSG are already planning for life after Rodgers, following an underwhelming start to the 2015-16 campaign, and are ready to turn to Ancelotti in a bid to reverse the club’s ailing fortunes.
Ancelotti would be a superb appointment
A growing number of disgruntled Liverpool fans have voiced their concerns with Rodgers via social media in recent weeks, with a significant number calling for the club to appoint the out-of-work Jurgen Klopp.
Indeed, it’s understood that some perturbed fans are even prepared to dress up as the former Borussia Dortmund manager during Liverpool’s next Premier League match against Aston Villa on Saturday.
However, others have called for the club to appoint the successful Ancelotti, whose glittering CV boasts spells with AC Milan, Juventus, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.
And if the Italian accepts the call from FSG, Rodgers is unlikely to have long left at Anfield.
