Iago Aspas outshines Luis Suarez as Barcelona lose 4-1

Published 1 Comments

As Liverpool laboured to a penalty shootout victory over League Two Carlisle United last night, two of their former strikers were facing off in La Liga.

Iago Aspas and Luis Suarez, two forwards with different reputations on Merseyside, were in action as Celta Vigo welcomed Barcelona to the Balaidos.

In a surprising turn of events, the Anfield flop completely outshone the Uruguayan forward and helped himself to a delightful double. See all the goals HERE.

Celta produced a faultless performance to claim a deserved three points with a resounding 4-1 victory.

Suarez was a shadow of his usual self and failed to register a shot on target as the Catalan club suffered their first defeat of the season.

Aspas appears to have rediscovered his form following a disastrous spell at Liverpool and showcased the ability that convinced Brendan Rodgers to fork out £9 million for his services in 2013.

The Spaniard scored a solitary League Cup goal in his 15 appearances for the Reds, before being shipped out on loan to Sevilla.

The 28-year-old is remembered on Merseyside for taking one of the worst corner kicks in history, during their title defining 2-0 loss to Chelsea, and that pretty much sums up his spell in the Premier League.

In recent days, Liverpool fans have watched in bewilderment as Anfield flops produce fine performances for their new clubs.

First Mario Balotelli, who scored a stunning free-kick in AC Milan's 3-2 win over Udinese, and then Aspas' display to dismantle the champions of Europe.

Many fans were happy to see the back of Aspas this summer, however, opinion was split on Balotelli.

Despite his attitude being questionable, there is no doubting his ability. The Italian was never utilised in the right way by Rodgers and his form suffered as a result.

Regardless of how he performs in the Italian capital, his Liverpool future under Rodgers looks bleak. But if the Northern Irish boss gets the chop his successor may be persuaded to give the forward a second chance.
