Jose Mourinho insists Radamel Falcao had a good game against Walsall

Published 1 Comments

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho insisted he was happy with Radamel Falcao's performance in the 4-1 Capital One Cup win over Walsall last night.

The Colombian striker failed to find the back of the net but did have two efforts cleared off the line as the Blues booked their place in the last 16.

However, his overall performance echoed his time in England as a whole; disappointing.

On a night that was considered a dress rehearsal for the vacant striker's slot, following Diego Costa's three-match ban for violent conduct, the former Manchester United man was overshadowed by Loic Remy.

The French forward scored Chelsea's second as he latched on to a Ramires pass while Falcao was frustrated by goal-line clearances from James O’Connor and Paul Downing.

Playing on the left of an attacking trio, the former Newcastle forward was a constant threat as the west London club overpowered their lowly opposition.

However, Mourinho was happy with the performance of the AS Monaco loanee in the absence of Costa.

As per the Evening Standard, he said: "It was a good game for Falcao, a good 90 mins - important for fitness.

"He worked a lot, ran a lot, moved a lot. He was in the game a lot. For the first time this season he was on the pitch for a long, long time so it was a good game for him."

But he seems to be in the minority who think the South American had a good game. The Mirror gave the 29-year-old a shocking 4/10 match rating.

With Costa still to serve two games of his ban, Chelsea will have to make do with alternative options against Newcastle and Southampton.

Falcao's performance against League One opposition will not fill fans with confidence heading back to league action.

Remy appears to be the better option to replace the Spaniard, however, Mourinho seems convinced he can return Falcao to his former glory.
