Anthony Martial’s agent hits out at Arsene Wenger

Published 3 Comments

The agent of Manchester United’s Anthony Martial has hit out at Arsene Wenger after the Arsenal manager claimed he was not prepared to pay a huge fee on a player he regarded as being more of a winger than a striker.

Wenger had also been quoted as saying - per BBC Sport, shortly after United signed Martial - that the £36 million transfer was evidence of the lack of top-quality players available to big clubs.

But Martial’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, totally disagrees with Wenger’s assessment - and it’s not difficult to understand why after watching the impressive 19-year-old in action over the past three weeks.

“Anthony is a true modern centre-forward who can change a side,” Lamboley told RMC Sport, according to the London Evening Standard. “I am surprised by the analysis of Wenger, who has apparently been following him since he was a teenager. If Wenger made his analysis to justify not signing Anthony, then I accept his words and so he is a winger.

“But in football, there are those who follow footballers and those who buy them.”

Anthony Martial is on fire

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal may have signed Martial thanks in part to his versatility - it’s no secret that the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich head coach likes his players to be multi-functional - but since arriving at Old Trafford, the teenager has only played upfront.

Martial enjoyed a dream debut with his current employers, scoring after coming off the bench against fierce rivals Liverpool, before adding two more goals to his tally against Southampton a week later.

The recently-capped France international made it four goals in four appearances for Manchester United with the final goal against Ipswich Town in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night.

At this rate, Wenger’s decision not to sign Martial will end up looking very foolish indeed.

But there’s still an awful long way to go yet for Martial before he proves, beyond all doubt, that he’s the real deal rather than a mere flash in the pan.
