At NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn, William Regal announced that a tag team tournament would be taking place to honour the memory of the late Dusty Rhodes.
Dusty played a massive role in making NXT what it is today. From producing the shows to training the Superstars and Divas, and even helping them through different character changes.
So it was only fitting that the tournament was billed as the ‘Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic’.

A number of teams have battled it out over the last few weeks in the hope of winning the tournament, as that too will be a massive honour.
There are only four teams remaining and the finals will be taking place at NXT TakeOver: Respect on October 7.

Which of the teams stands the best chance of winning? Or who actually deserves the honour of reigning supreme in the tournament?
#4 – BARON CORBIN AND RHYNO
This was an odd combination right from the beginning, especially since the two were feuding not long ago.
Nevertheless, they have managed to work together so far and have picked up a number of impressive victories.
They managed to get past The Ascension when they made their return on NXT. They then defeated the popular team of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa and are now in the semi-finals.
As good as they’ve been in the tournament I just don’t think they’re the right fit to win the tournament.
The winners need to be a solid team who will stay together for a while, you just don’t see that with Corbin and Rhyno.
#3 – FINN BALOR AND SAMOA JOE
The same applies to Balor and Joe.
The winners need to be a team who will be a team for a long time. Balor and Joe don’t seem like the sort of guys who will stick together as a team with one of them holding the biggest prize on NXT as well.
Although they’d be a massive asset to the tag team division and make it even more competitive than it already is, I just think they’re not the right team to win this tournament.
You could argue that they should never have teamed up, but they have racked up some big wins in the process and their presence in this tournament has been vital.
They’ve gone past two excellent teams in The Lucha Dragons as well as Enzo Amore and Big Cass.
I feel that appearing in the finals is a good place for one of them to turn heel, which would set up an NXT Championship clash for later in the year.
#2 – SCOTT DAWSON AND DASH WILDER
These guys have definitely stepped up in the last few months, on television and on the live events also.
Recently, Edge praised the two and let fans know he was a big fan of theirs, so the expectation is already set quite high for them.
Like other teams, they’ve also defeated big names to get to the final stages of the tournament.
In the opening round, they defeated Tucker Knight and Elias Samson but their quarter final match is what helped The Mechanics grow in popularity.
They actually defeated the current NXT Tag Team Champions to advance, managing to get past the Vaudevillians just shows the faith the hierarchy have in Dawson and Wilder.
It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see them get past Balor and Joe, and they would be worthy winners of the tournament if they can get that far.
#1 – JASON JORDAN AND CHAD GABLE
In my opinion, the winners of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic have to be Jordan and Gable.
They’re one of the newly-formed teams on NXT after Jordan found it difficult connecting well with partners.
Gable has been the perfect choice, and he has a real bright future ahead of him if the WWE can overlook his size.
This could be a good way to elevate them right into the title scene, a win in this tournament would be huge for them.
They’ve defeated Neville and Solomon Crowe, they defeated Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley and now Corbin and Rhyno stand in their way.
I like Jordan and Gable as they have that college wrestling look about them, and they’re some of the finest wrestlers on NXT as well.
They’re often compared to Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin and it would be the perfect time for them to live up to those comparisons.
Jordan and Gable are my picks to win the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
