Top 10 Surprise 2016 Royal Rumble Entrants

Published 18 Comments

The Royal Rumble is a very exciting occasion, and one of the reasons as to why that is the case is the fact that many familiar faces resurface.

In the following list, I will state who I personally believe should make a comeback at the 2016 event. However, I am going to leave out superstars who are incredibly unlikely to come back any time soon, or who have sadly passed away, so apologies to fans of CM Punk or Hulk Hogan.

10. Cody Rhodes

I know that this may seem confusing to some, as technically Rhodes is currently working on WWE television under his Stardust gimmick, but provided Rhodes is still using that gimmick come January time, it may be time for Cody to reappear and ditch the Stardust attire and face paint.

Or Stardust could take part in the match, and later Cody could enter, it wouldn’t be the first time that a superstar had entered more than once under a different gimmick.

9. Brock Lesnar

Again, not really a return as such as Lesnar is contracted to WWE and appears on television multiple times a year, but this list is technically surprise entrants, not returns, and a lot of people would be surprised if, without any prior build up, the sound of Lesnar’s Next Best Thing theme filled the arena and the beast incarnate took to the ring and cleared house.

With his feud with the Undertaker seemingly coming to a head at Hell in a Cell, it might be time to put Lesnar back into the title frame, or the Rumble could be used to set up a new feud.

8. Finn Balor

Recently, WWE have allowed for a number of NXT stars to show their worth on the main roster. Some of these people include current Intercontinental Champion Kevin Owens, Neville, Charlotte and more.

However, one absentee from that list is the NXT Champion Finn Balor, and should he still not be plying his trade in the main roster come January, the Royal Rumble could be the stage to introduce some of the lesser – informed sections of the WWE universe to the one they call Finn Balor.

7. Daniel Bryan

Daniel Bryan has not fought in the ring since being forced to vacate the Intercontinental Championship he won at Wrestlemania 31.

This is due to a second big injury that he suffered about a year removed from the first. Bryan has stated recently that he has been told by doctors he is okay to compete again, however WWE are hesitant to rush him back, especially seeing as they have come under fire recently from former wrestlers regarding concussions.

So should the bearded goat still be on the shelf come the turn of the year, a lot of WWE fans would love to see him return at the Rumble.

6. Alberto Del Rio

Alberto Del Rio is a tricky situation. The Mexican superstar was fired by WWE after it was revealed he had assaulted a member of the backstage crew.

However, what was later revealed was that he slapped the man over a racial slur made towards him. The move to fire Del Rio for essentially standing up for himself and his fellow Mexicans was met with a lot of negativity from the wrestling world, and I personally would like to see this rectified.

Del Rio is currently working for Lucha Underground Wrestling in Mexico.

5. Shane McMahon

The boss’ son hasn’t worked for WWE for the past 5 years, but myself, and some sections of WWE fans would be excited to hear the words “Here comes the money” at the Rumble event. Especially if he were to derail the plans for the Authority and whoever they are backing come the time of the event.

4. John Morrison

He had the look of a WWE superstar, his physique and his high flying mobility, but injuries didn’t do him any favours in his WWE run which ended in 2011, but the former Intercontinental Champion, who now too wrestles for Lucha Underground has been back in business in recent years, and it would be good to see him be given another run in WWE.

3. Beth Phoenix

It isn’t unheard of for a diva to take part in the Royal Rumble, and so this would be a good stage to bring back Beth Phoenix, who hasn’t been seen in WWE since 2012, the former Divas Champion could add some needed spice to the divas division, and give Charlotte and Co some competition for the Divas title. This would be her second appearance in a Royal Rumble match.

2. Rey Mysterio

Yet another Lucha Underground star, speculation has been rife lately about a potential return for the thriving underdog Rey Mysterio. A former Royal Rumble winner (having entered at number 2), Mysterio would be accepted by fans worldwide with open arms should WWE decide to try lure him back.

1. Jeff Hardy

Did I say something about speculation? One of the biggest rumours of late regarding WWE and returns concerns the charismatic enigma Jeff Hardy.

WWE has been teasing fans lately by posting polls online asking fans who they’d like to see return, and just like myself, they would love to see the former WWE Champion grace a WWE ring again. The word online is that WWE have been speaking about Hardy backstage recently. Hardy’s TNA contract expires in 2016.
