Bastian Schweinsteiger has expressed his excitement on Twitter ahead of Manchester United’s crunch Premier League clash against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

The Germany international, who is already a firm favourite at Old Trafford following an impressive start to life with the Red Devils, tweeted: “Excited about the big match coming up against Arsenal on Sunday! #mufc”.

Manchester United fans then responded to Schweinsteiger’s message with their own tweets - and you can see some of the best replies by scrolling down this page.

Schweinsteiger was subbed off with 20 minutes to go during United’s 2-1 win over Wolfsburg in the Champions League on Wednesday night, presumably in a bid to keep him fresh for this weekend’s match at the Emirates Stadium.

The World Cup winner faces competition for a place in Louis van Gaal’s starting line-up from Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin, but it would a genuine surprise if the former Bayern Munich midfielder doesn’t start in north London.

Schweinsteiger has history with Arsenal

Schweinsteiger scored against Arsenal in March 2014 to help dump the Gunners out of that season’s Champions League campaign, and Van Gaal will be hoping the 31-year-old can make a similarly decisive contribution this weekend.

Manchester United will head into the international break top of the Premier League table by securing all three points against their title rivals.

But Arsene Wenger will be desperate to secure maximum points following Tuesday night’s humiliating 3-2 defeat to Olympiakos - a result which prompted fans, once again, to ask whether the veteran French coach is still the right man for the job.
