Arsene Wenger: I didn't think I could sign Anthony Martial for Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal made no attempt to sign Manchester United striker Anthony Martial in the summer, as they didn’t realise he was for sale.

The young French forward made a £36million switch to Old Trafford from AS Monaco during the latter stages of the transfer window and has since proved to be a revelation in English football.

No Martial move

Meanwhile, Wenger has come under criticism recently for not bringing in a new forward when he had the chance.

However, when asked why he didn’t try and match United for Martial, he said he was told the 19-year-old wasn’t for sale.

"I was surprised they sold him," Wenger conceded, as relayed by Sky Sports.

"The amount of money was massive. I believe that you could think that, if you are Monaco, you could have sold him as well next season.

"So I thought they would not sell him this year because they sold many other players.

"I thought they would maintain their word. He was not sellable. He was not on the list. He was one of the players Monaco did not want to sell, so we never made an approach for him.

"Only an acceptable amount of money after could do it. We always liked him, even when he was in Lyons."

Wenger choice

Naturally, the pressure has shifted onto Wenger due to how well Martial appears to have settled in at his new club.

Four goals in six appearances is a stat that underlines the talent the teenager has at his disposal, whilst Arsenal’s issues with regards to finding a prolific frontman haven’t been addressed.

Not even business?

It’s unfair to say that Wenger dithered and dallied until it was too late during the most recent transfer window, but Gunners fans do have a case for questioning why there was no real effort to sign a new forward.

The likes of Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain were loosely linked with the north London giants, but no mega-money transfer ever really came close to materialising.
