Michael Owen is not convinced that Carlo Ancelotti would be a good appointment for Liverpool - and wants the Reds to hire Jurgen Klopp instead.
Klopp is now the overwhelming favourite to succeed Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, with fresh reports claiming the former Borussia Dortmund coach will sign a three-year deal with the Merseyside outfit by the end of the week.
Ancelotti remains the bookmakers’ second favourite to become Liverpool manager, but Owen wonders if the ex-Real Madrid head coach possesses the hunger required for such a role, having won a host of major honours with some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

“I think that a younger and potentially hungrier manager in Klopp would be the best fit for Liverpool in their current predicament.”
Owen is right: Klopp is the better choice
It’s hard to argue against Owen’s opinion that, out of Ancelotti and Klopp, the latter would be the more determined.
Klopp may have won back-to-back Bundesliga titles and reached a Champions League final during his seven-year spell with Dortmund, but he hasn’t yet proven his ability to manage outside of Germany.
Ancelotti, though, has won the biggest titles with AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
In truth, Liverpool may not have had enough to convince the 56-year-old to take the job at Anfield, even if the Italian was their first choice.
Klopp is the bolder appointment by Fenway Sports Group - but fortune favours the brave and Liverpool’s decision to hire the 48-year-old could pay dividends.
