Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata believes it's a shame that goalkeeper Victor Valdes has been frozen out at Old Trafford.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the Spain international claims his compatriot wants to prove himself but has insisted that he doesn't know what happened between the former Barcelona 'keeper and Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal.
Since joining the club on a free transfer back in January, Valdes has endured a torrid time in Manchester and last featured for the club on the final day of last season.

After refusing to play for the Under-21 side last term, the veteran was axed from the club's pre-season tour of the US and wasn't handed a first-team squad number ahead of the new campaign.
However, despite his difficulties, he failed to complete a move away from the club in the summer despite being heavily linked with Turkish outfit Besiktas.
Mata, who has been starring on the first-team scene, claims the Valdes situation is a shame. The Spaniard stated: “It’s a shame what is happening with him as he is a great goalkeeper.
“He wants to compete and has proved himself as a goalkeeper.
“I don’t know what happened between him and Van Gaal. That is something only they can say.”
Must move on
Ultimately, Valdes must complete a move away from the Theatre of Dreams sooner rather than later. At 33, the shot-stopper is approaching the latter stages of his career, so must return to action in the immediate future.
It's certainly not going to happen at Old Trafford, so the situation has to be resolved. It's best for all involved that the player's contract is terminated.
