Costa 'overweight'

Diego Costa’s not had the best of starts to his Chelsea season it’s fair to say, but a new revelation from the striker goes some way to explaining just why.

The controversial forward has admitted he was ‘overweight’ before the start of the term, in an effort to take the heat off of under-fire boss Jose Mourinho, stating that he and his teammates needed to shoulder most of the blame.

Costa revealed he had fallen out of his diet during the summer and wasn’t fully prepared when he came back for pre-season training.

"I’m going to be very honest: maybe a few weeks ago, five or six weeks ago, I was not on top of my game. At least physically. We talk within the players and we know that, maybe at the beginning, we were not 100% as we were supposed to be when we got here," he said, as per The Guardian.

"I got injured at the end of last season and then I went on holiday. Maybe I got out of my diet and, when I came back, I was not the way I was supposed to be. I was a little bit overweight. That affected my game.

"You can be selfish and blame it on the manager but I’m not going to do that. I’m responsible 100%, and so are the other guys."

Perhaps that’s why he only has two goals in seven appearances this campaign.

Fans unhappy with Amelia

Moving on, and it appears Chelsea fans - yes, that’s you - are less than happy with the signing of 33-year-old goalkeeper Marco Amelia.

It was confirmed yesterday that the former AC Milan stopper - a World Cup winner from 2006 - had signed as a backup for Asmir Begovic, but the fan reaction on Twitter was less than complimentary.

Cech admission

Lastly, Petr Cech has explained why he left Stamford Bridge this summer, stating that he needed to leave as the club had moved on from him.

The Czech international departed for Arsenal despite being a perennial fan favourite and described it as closing a chapter due to the fact that Mourinho had already made his decision on who he wanted in goal.
