Barcelona could tempt Ander Herrera away from Manchester United in January

Barcelona are on the lookout for a new central midfielder once their transfer ban is lifted in January.

The injury to Rafinha Alcantara has left the Catalan club with problems in the centre of midfield and the Blaugrana have targeted Manchester United's Ander Herrera as a possible addition.

Despite being a fans' favourite at Old Trafford, Herrera has failed to nail down a starting role under Louis van Gaal and, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are confident they can take him to the Nou Camp if the situation does not improve.

The Spanish publication also states his agent's relationship with the club could be a pivotal factor. Arturo Canales, whose other clients include Gerard Pique, has a good relationship with Barcelona.

However, they do say that Herrera is not the only option the Catalan club are looking at. Ilkay Gundogan, Paul Pogba and Marco Verrati were also mentioned as possible additions.

Manchester United fans would more than likely want  to see their Spanish midfielder stay at Old Trafford, but it is clear to see he does not have the trust of Van Gaal.

Despite some strong performances in the second half of last season, he has struggled for a consistent run in the first-team.

Having started in the 3-1 win against Liverpool, scoring a penalty, he lost his place in the Premier League side and has been limited to two cup appearances since the win against the Merseyside club.

Quite why Herrera has not been able to hold down a regular spot in the United side is up for debate. He has all the attributes to be a huge success in the north-west, but the lure of Barcelona could bring an end to his Old Trafford career.
