New Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is keen on making Neven Subotic his first signing at Anfield according to the Sun.
However Borussia Dortmund are holding out for a fee of around £15 million for the central defender.
Klopp has been linked with a host of his former players at Dortmund since he was announced as Brendan Rodgers' replacement on Thursday, and this morning reports suggest that he is after former Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski as well.
The news that Klopp wants to raid his former club for Subotic, rather than the likes of Marco Reus or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, will come as a surprise to Liverpool fans who are hoping for some big-name arrivals.
The price tag placed on the 26-year-old, who followed Klopp to Mainz as well as Dortmund, will likely be an issue too after Liverpool splashed the cash in the summer. The club can currently call upon Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure in defence - but it seems as though Klopp isn't happy with his options as it stands.
The Sun say that Subotic is Klopp's top target ahead of the January transfer window, and that an enquiry could be made soon.
It was reported earlier this week that the German boss was willing to give current members of the Liverpool squad a fair chance before he decides on what improvements he needs to make.
His first game in charge of Liverpool will come when his side travel to White Hart Lane after the international break to take on Tottenham.
