Memphis Depay produces superb nutmeg for Netherlands v Czech Republic

Published 10 Comments

It was a hugely disappointing evening for Manchester United star Memphis Depay last night, as the Netherlands failed to secure qualification for next summer’s European Championships in France.

But there was one moment from that match that will undoubtedly please the Red Devils’ faithful: a superb nutmeg from the winger on Czech Republic defender Theodor Gebre Selassie.

Memphis picked up the ball on the right touchline, dragged it back twice to commit the defender, before rolling the ball through his opponent’s legs and picking out a teammate with a pass. (You can see Memphis’s skill by scrolling down to the video on this page).

Unfortunately, that was about as good as it got for the 21-year-old who, along with fellow Manchester United teammate Daley Blind, will not be featuring at Euro 2016 after the Oranje’s shock failure to qualify for the tournament.

Czech Republic went 3-0 up just after the hour mark, thanks to goals from Pavel Kaderábek, Josef Šural and a tragicomic own goal by Robin van Persie. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Van Persie made the scoreline more respectable with two goals in the final 20 minutes, but it wasn’t enough to send Holland through to next summer’s finals.

It could be tough to motivate Memphis and Blind

No doubt this failure will have hit every member of the Netherlands squad - including Memphis and Blind - hard.

It’s now the job of Louis van Gaal - who led the Dutch national team to the World Cup semi-finals just last year - to ensure both players are motivated for this weekend’s Premier League clash against Everton at Goodison Park. That, though, might prove to be easier said than done.

Memphis has been lacking confidence in recent weeks - he was subbed off at half-time in the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal - and this latest blow will be another setback for the talented 21-year-old.

How he bounces back could determine whether or not Manchester United beat the Toffees on Saturday afternoon.
