Juan Mata hits out at Jose Mourinho over 'luxury player' claims

Published 6 Comments

Manchester United star Juan Mata has hit back at former boss Jose Mourinho.

The Chelsea manager allowed the Spaniard to depart Stamford Bridge in 2014 despite being named the Blues' Player of the Year in consecutive seasons.

Since joining the Red Devils, Mata has gone from strength-to-strength and is arguably showing his best form in the Premier League under Louis van Gaal.

Upon his departure from west London, Mourinho labelled the 27-year-old a 'luxury' player and, speaking to the Times, Mata finally responded, saying:  "I've scored as many goals for Manchester United in the Premier League as for Chelsea, but in something like 30 games less.

"In terms of scoring and assisting and I'm quite happy with the stats, and stats don't lie. They are facts.

"If a luxury player is a player who scores and assists and has good stats, then I'm happy to be a luxury player. I want luxury players in my team. I like creative players and players who do different things. It's easy to say certain players are luxuries, especially when you've lost a game."

Following the Blues' poor start to the season, some fans may be wondering why they ever let Mata leave.

It is a decision that often divides Chelsea fans with many supporters questioning the decision of their manager to let such an influential figure depart the club.

Brazilian midfielder Oscar, who was touted as the Spaniard's replacement, has not developed in the way many people expected.

Although, United will be happy with Mourinho's decision. Mata has become a pivotal figure at Old Trafford and claimed the club's Player of the Month award for September following a productive month.

The former Valencia man has already found the net three times in the league for the Red Devils this season and looks to be growing into his position on the right side of their attack.
