Who should answer John Cena's Open Challenge at Hell in a Cell?

Published 13 Comments

This Sunday, at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view John Cena puts his United States Championship on the line in another open challenge.

Cena has made a habit of giving Superstars an opportunity to compete for the championship almost every week and a number of Superstars have tried their luck.

We’re in an interesting situation now as Cena is set to take time off after Hell in a Cell and will return at the end of the year.

So, it’s safe to assume that Cena is set to drop the United States Championship on Sunday against an unnamed opponent.

There are a number of names fans will be quick to throw some names out who probably would deserve a chance at carrying the championship.

Guys like Rusev, Dolph Ziggler, Neville and Cesaro would be fantastic opponents, but the fact that they’re now competing on the pre-show means it looks unlikely they will answer the challenge.

Another attractive option which could be an option is a potential unification bout with Kevin Owens - should he retain against Ryback.

Taking out those names from the equation, here are the Superstars I believe are potential contenders to answer John Cena’s open challenge at Hell in a Cell.

If Strowman was to answer the open challenge on behalf of The Wyatt Family it would definitely be one of the bigger surprises, but it would also help push Strowman.

It’s no secret that Vince McMahon and other WWE officials are high on Strowman, and a potential WrestleMania clash with The Undertaker has been touted in recent weeks.

If they still plan on using him in the same manner next year then this would be the perfect start for him and it could be the right move.

Strowman hasn’t really been tested yet so this would definitely be his biggest test to date, and would add another achievement to his already-impressive first few months on the main roster. Defeating Cena would be massive for him, and a return match in the coming months could also be on the card.

This would really help him stand out and would be key to developing him as a monster.

The New Day are the hottest thing going in the WWE right now and will defend the WWE Tag Team Championships against The Dudley Boyz this Sunday.

Although the New Day can be seen as a ‘comedic’ tag team they have actually been pretty dominant in most episodes, most notable taking out Cena, Ziggler and the Dudleyz in the same night and they even closed out the show.

That’s a pretty big statement and it shows the WWE have faith in the trio who continue to step it up every single week.

They’ve had run-ins with Cena over the last few weeks and it would be interesting to see the three of them carry two championships on the main roster which would elevate their stock even further.

Breeze looks like the option that the WWE will go with if he does make his main roster debut at Hell in a Cell on Sunday.

Plenty of rumours are circulating online surrounding a Prince Pretty debut on the main roster and you can’t  imagine a better way to make your mark on the main roster by not only answering Cena’s open challenge but defeating the champion in your very first night.

Those that have seen Breeze work both in FCW and NXT will know that he is a highly entertaining and solid in-ring worker.

He has the charisma, the skill and the look to be a massive success. I do think this would be a good move by the WWE as it will be a huge debut which will keep him in the limelight, and it would avoid him becoming another Adam Rose or Fandango.

He has the talent but it’s a massive risk, one which I think the WWE should take.

Ambrose probably looks like more of a possibility now, more so than he did a few weeks ago and now it’s because he isn’t on the card.

Originally he was scheduled to team with Randy Orton in the pre-show to take on Luke Harper and Strowman, but with Orton’s injury the match has been taken off the card completely and replaced with a six-man tag team match.

Ambrose is probably too over with the crowd to remain off the card and it would be good to see him win championship gold with such support behind him.

The last time he was the United States Champion he was still a part of The Shield and it’s safe to say he didn’t have the most active of title reigns.

This time it could be different as fans would support him in this match and his unhinged character could allow for some interesting match-ups in the coming weeks.
